Hi, I’m Jen - a Bokashi composting coach, educator, and newbie community gardener who’s passionate about helping people turn food scraps into nutrient-rich soil even if they think composting isn’t an option for them.
Over 4 years ago, I started composting in a townhouse with just a deck and a tiny backyard. No experience, no yard waste pile, and plenty of pest problems from an adjacent greenspace.
I began out of environmental guilt over sending food to the landfill and a desire to lower my waste fees. But along the way, something clicked: I saw the direct connection between healthy soil and healthy plants, and composting became something I loved, not just something I “should” do.
I ditched my organics bin service, started worm composting and Bokashi composting, and never looked back. In 2023, I graduated from my county’s Master Composter program, and by 2024, I was teaching Bokashi classes and demonstrations as a volunteer - training more than 100 people, including the most recent Master Composter class.
I know firsthand how hard it can be to find a composting method that works when you’re short on space, have nearby neighbors, nit-picky associations, and want to avoid pests, smells, or messiness. That’s why I now focus on teaching clear, simple ways to succeed with Bokashi, so anyone can compost confidently - even in small spaces - and handle foods that most composting methods can’t, like cooked leftovers, meat, and dairy.
But my mission goes beyond education. Composting can be a shared experience. A way to connect with neighbors, swap tips, and inspire each other to take small, meaningful actions for the planet. Through classes, community events, and ongoing group programs, I aspire to bring people together to learn, laugh, and celebrate the positive impact we’re making collectively.
Before Bokashi, I spent 20 years as a technical writer - skills I now use to create detailed-oriented composting workshops, classes, and resources.
My mission is simple: make composting possible, practical, and enjoyable for everyone, while building community and connection around sustainable living.
If I can do it in a townhouse with a tiny yard, you can do it too! 🌱
